Why Poverty is a Peace Issue and Why We Should Embrace it as one Now.

Why Poverty is a Peace Issue and Why We Should Embrace it as one Now.

We all know this… Eisenhower said it.   “Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired, signifies in the final sense a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed.”

We all believe it. We have all been advocating this for as long as any of us can remember. But now things are different. The current economic crisis which persists for way too many in this country (And around the planet) brings it all home as we all knew it would be brought home sooner or later.

We have all done our work advocating redirecting military spending to social needs for a very long time. We watched as we were sometimes turned down by groups working on other social issues when we WANTED to work together because to be seen with us risked, for these organizations, backlashes from a public addicted to military security that threatened their work. So we waited.

With the global economic decline and, more directly, with the current decline of the U.S. empire, the time is ripe for coming together and building real alliances… Nothing anyone reading this does not already know. But we are called to from history to take a stronger stand.

Dr. Martin Luther King, as usual, was ahead of the curve on this. On April 15, 1967, he spoke at an anti-war rally in NYC saying “…And I believe everyone has a duty to be in both the civil-rights and peace movements. But for those who presently choose but one, I would hope they will finally come to see the moral roots common to both.

The following year He began organizing the “Poor People’s March” because he felt that Congress had shown “hostility to the poor” by spending “military funds with alacrity and generosity”. He contrasted this with the situation faced by poor Americans, claiming that Congress had merely provided “poverty funds with miserliness”.[139] His vision was for change that was more revolutionary than mere reform: he cited systematic flaws of “racism, poverty, militarism and materialism”, and argued that “reconstruction of society itself is the real issue to be faced”.[140]

Lesser known was his call for compensation. King stated that black Americans, as well as other disadvantaged Americans, should be compensated for historical wrongs.

King said that he did not seek a full restitution of wages lost to slavery, which he believed impossible, but proposed a government compensatory program of $50 billion over ten years to all disadvantaged groups.[36]

He posited that “the money spent would be more than amply justified by the benefits that would accrue to the nation through a spectacular decline in school dropouts, family breakups, crime rates, illegitimacy, swollen relief rolls, rioting and other social evils”.[37] He presented this idea as an application of the common law regarding settlement of unpaid labor, but clarified that he felt that the money should not be spent exclusively on blacks. He stated, “It should benefit the disadvantaged of all races”.[38]

I mention all of this to underline the notion that “Welfare” which carries an unfair stigma as a “handout” should really be seen as compensation for work done that benefits all of society. Parents and care givers play a vital social role in raising healthy, well adjusted children, Public investment in this sector is for the greater good and, as we all know, is a much better investment in the nation’s real security than any number of over blown over funded unneeded weapons systems. The legislation that I am proposing we endorse and the campaign that I propose we participate in, to the degree possible, The RISE out of Poverty Act and its companion piece the WORK Act, come in at a price tag of around $2.5 Billion. (Though the final cost is likely to be much higher, and we have asked National Priorities Project to help us determine both more accurate costs and appropriate trade-offs from the military side of the budget. But for now we will be using this lower figure.) Compare this to the F-35 which comes in at $12.6 Billion, Terminating the V-22 Osprey, a system with little real need, would save $2 billion. Another $2.9 Billion for operations in Iraq. What can I possibly write to put this in perspective?

It is therefore that I propose that peace and justice organizations endorse the following two pieces of legislation realizing the dream of King and positioning ourselves for the future while developing new allies among social needs organizations who increasingly are calling for cuts in military spending now that real reductions on are the table. (See either of the web sites below)

The time has come for us to get on board and by adding our name to this effort, and mobilizing our networks and members and activists, each according to our abilities, clearly demonstrating that we are ready to work alongside groups that are now taking up our call to reorder national spending priorities.

Specifically we should:

  • Sign the endorsement form. (Also on one of the web sites.)
  • Put a link for the endorsement form for our groups and allies up on our web sites and display prominently.
  • Do at least one e-mail “blast” to our activists when ACTION ALERTS are generated for this upcoming legislation.
  • Reach out to congressional allies to seek co-sponsors. Help us find a new sponsor for the WORK Act
  • Put up educational materials on RISE and WORK on web sites.
  • Distribute petitions and return to  www.globalwomenstrike.net or www.everymothernetwork.net

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

Congressional Reform Act of 2011

The 26th amendment (granting the right to vote for 18 year-olds) took only 3 months & 8 days to be ratified! Why? Simple! The people demanded it. That was in 1971…before computers, before e-mail, before cell phones, etc. Of the 27 amendments to the Constitution, seven (7) took 1 year or less to become the law of the land…all because of public pressure.

1. No Tenure / No Pension. A Congressman collects a salary while in office and receives no pay when they are out of office.

2. Congress (past, present & future) participates in Social Security. All funds in the Congressional retirement fund move to the Social Security system immediately. All future funds flow into the Social Security system, and Congress participates with the American people. It may not be used for any other purpose.

3. Congress can purchase their own retirement plan, just as all Americans do.

4. Congress will no longer vote themselves a pay raise. Congressional pay will rise by the lower of CPI or 3%.

5. Congress loses their current health care system and participates in the same health care system as the American people.

6. Congress must equally abide by all laws they impose on the American people.

7. All contracts with past and present Congressmen are void effective 1/1/12. The American people did not make this contract with Congressmen. Congressmen made all these contracts for themselves.

Serving in Congress is an honor, not a career. The Founding Fathers envisioned citizen legislators, so ours should serve their term(s), then go home and back to work.

Public Option

Jack Smith, Working Class, posted this as a comment. It’s an important statement and way too long to be hidden as a response to another post so I am taking the liberty to post it in this thread.

A state based public insurance option is NOT!! a Public Option. Nor is it a Strong, National, Medicare like Public Option.

A majority of voters would rather have a Democrats only bill with a Public Option. Rather than a bipartisan bill without a Public Option.

ATTENTION!! Congress Has The Votes Needed To Pass A Public Option – TODAY http://bit.ly/TCq7O

Why A Strong Public Option Is Essential – By jacksmith – Working Class

Robert Reich explains the pubic option: http://bit.ly/dDYSJ http://robertreich.blogspot.com/

Hollywood Supports The Public Option 🙂 http://bit.ly/3XLwPi

It’s not just because more than two thirds of the American people want a single payer health care system. And if they cant have a single payer system 77% of all Americans want a strong government-run public option on day one (86% of democrats, 75% of independents, and 72% republicans). Basically everyone.

It’s not just because according to a new AARP POLL: 86 percent of seniors want universal healthcare security for All, including 93% of Democrats, 87% of Independents, and 78% of Republicans. With 79% of seniors supporting creating a new strong Government-run public option plan, available immediately. Including 89% of Democrats, 80% of Independents, and 61% of Republicans, STUNNING!!

It’s not just because it will lower cost. Because a strong public option will dramatically lower cost for everyone. And dramatically improved the quality of care everyone receives in America and around the World. Rich, middle class, and poor a like.

It’s not just because it will save trillions of dollars and prevent the needless deaths of millions more of YOU, caused by a rush to profit by the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX!

It’s not just because every expert in every field, including economist, and Nobel laureates all agree that free market based healthcare systems don’t work. Never have and never will. The US has the only truly free market based healthcare system in the World. And as you all know now, IT IS A DISASTER!

It’s not just because providing or denying medically necessary care for profit motivations is wrong. Because it is WRONG! It’s professionally, ethically, and morally REPUGNANT!, Animalistic, VILE and EVIL.

THE REASON THE PUBLIC OPTION IS ESSENTIAL:

The public option is ESSENTIAL because over 200 million of you are trapped in the forest of the wolves. Which is the forest of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! With no way out except through needless inhumane suffering, and DEATH. While the wolves tear at your flesh, and rip you limb from lib. Then feast on your lifeless bodies like a dead carcase for transplant parts.

At the most vulnerable times of your lives (when you were sick and hurting), millions of you have had to fight and loose cruel, but heroic battles. Fighting against the big guns of the DISGRACEFUL, GREED DRIVEN, PRIVATE FOR PROFIT MEDICAL INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX! in the forest of the wolves. All because you have no place else to go. You have no other CHOICE!

But the PUBLIC OPTION will give you someplace safe to go. And it will give us someplace safe to take you. The public option will be your refugium (your refuge). Where the wolves cannot get at you when your down, hurting, and vulnerable. Where everyone who needs it can find rest, security, comfort and the care they need. Protected by the BIG GUNS of We The People Of The United States. THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE AND COUNTRY ON EARTH.

This is why it is so critical that we do not lead another 50 million vulnerable, uninsured Americans into the forest of the wolves, without the protections of a Strong Government-run MEDICARE like public option. We The People Of The United States MUST NOT LET THAT HAPPEN to any more of our fellow Americans. If healthcare reform does not contain a strong MEDICARE like public option on day one. YOU MUST! KILL IT. Or you will do far more harm than good. And millions more will die needlessly. Rich, middle class, and poor a like.

To those who would continue to obstruct good and true healthcare reform for the American people, and who seek to trap millions more vulnerable Americans in the forest of the wolves. We will continue to fight you. We are prepared to wage all out war against you, and will eagerly DESTROY! you. Time…is…UP! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! No Co-op’s! No Triggers! NO INDIVIDUAL MANDATES! without a Strong MEDICARE like public option on day one.

Healthcare reform can be the GREATEST! Accomplishment of our time and century. A time when future generations may say of us, that we were all, AMERICAS GREATEST GENERATIONS.

BUT WE MUST ACT!

I therefore call on all my fellow Americans and the peoples of the World. To join us in this fight so that we may finish becoming the better America that we aspire to be for everyone.

SPREAD THE WORD!

I have been privileged to be witness as many of you fought, and struggled to take your first breath, and your last breath on this earth. Rich, middle class, and poor a like. Life is precious.

Whatever the cost. WE! MUST SUCCEED.

God Bless You My Fellow Human Beings

Democrats – Let’s Start a Campaign

The Internet chatter lately has been about Congressman Joe Sestak replacing Senator Arlen Specter as Pennsylvania’s candidate for US Senate on the Democratic ticket in 2010.  Right now, this seems like a good idea.

Listen to what Congressman Sestak has to say here… and the link to his website can be found here

Pennsylvania voted for “Change” last November and so far, Specter has not voted for change.

Announcement: Pike for PA 6th Congressional District

Gearing up for the primary season of 2010.  Democrat Doug Pike announces his intention to run for PA 6th Congressional District.

Democrat Doug Pike Announces for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 6th District

Doug Pike, a former Editorial Board member for The Philadelphia Inquirer, announced today that he is running to represent Pennsylvania’s 6th Congressional District in the U.S. Congress.

“I am committed to listening to people and figuring out solutions that actually help,” said Pike. “I’m not a career politician. I won’t play political games.  I’m running for Congress to bring a renewed focus on the needs of everyday citizens; and to replace a partisan career politician who has failed the people time and again.”
“We need to shake up a political system that too often fails to hear our voices, let alone solve urgent problems,” Pike continued. “Even in this economic crisis, career politicians are still playing partisan games. They just don’t get it.  For more than 20 years, I’ve been writing about the most important issues facing this country and our community.  Now I want to use that experience to make change in Washington.”

“We are confronting the gravest economic challenge of our lifetime, in part because of the policies of George Bush and Jim Gerlach,” said Pike.  “Now, Republicans in Congress just say no to everything that President Obama suggests.  That won’t work.  We need leaders who can come together to get our economy moving again.  And we need to invest in clean energy technologies, infrastructure, health care, and other urgent needs.”

Pike, who lives in Lower Merion in Montgomery County, served on the Editorial Board of The Philadelphia Inquirer for 14 years.  He graduated with honors fromPrinceton University in 1971. Prior to his work at The Philadelphia Inquirer, Pike served as a Special Assistant to Senator Paul Tsongas; he wrote speeches and issue summaries for the Senator. Pike has been involved with Greater Philadelphia Cares, and has worked with high school journalists through the Temple Press Tournament. He is currently a member of the International Visitors Council, the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, the American Society of Journalists and Authors, and the National Conference of Editorial Writers.

This District encompasses parts of Berks, Chester, Lehigh, and Montgomery counties.

Pike has also launched a campaign website today: www.PikeforCongress.com <http://www.PikeforCongress.com/>
Let’s kick out Gerlach.  He voted AGAINST the people of PA 6th CD and against jobs for Pennsylvanians when he voted “no” to the President’s stimulus plan.  Pike is the change that we need.

Move Over Rush, The Republicans Have a New Leader

Fantasy woman, Michelle Bachmann, is now the leader of the GOP.  She is powerful (snark) and she represents Republicans and she is ready to lead.

Michelle Bachman could benefit from a re-education camp because most of the time, she has no clue what she is talking about.  Sue Jeffers states that she would not send her children to re-education camp, except maybe “Jesus Camp”.

Michelle Bachmann thinks that Congress needs to be investigated for members that are anti-America.

So if you voted for Barack Obama, then you, too, may be anti-America.

Then there is this…

There is the re-education that happens at Jesus Camp along with the worshiping of a cardboard George W. Bush.  Jeffers and Bachmann would deem this re-education appropriate.

This is child abuse.

Don’t Let Them Do It

Big agriculture and factory farms are at it again. They never give up.

There is a bill in Congress, HR875, that is a threat to organic gardening. It could even put your small family plot at risk.

The original text of the bill can be viewed here….

Geezer Power, at Suzie-Q has more information and links along with a video.

Farmer Abuse:

(Did Monsanto “drop seed” on purpose? Does Monsanto own the judges?)

This is what the Monsanto Police do to the farmers in this nation and is brought to you by the Republicans and Bush. If Monsanto is allowed to continue with this food terrorism, we will return to feudalism.

(This video was filmed during the Bush Administration. Let’s make change happen during the Obama Administration.)

Whoever owns the food supply, rules the world.

Contact your Congressperson and tell them to vote “NO” on HR875.
